HERBARIUM

Who or what will determine where people, animals, and
plants can live in the future? This question is central to the work of the artist duo Driessens & van den Baar. At a time when
ecological and political tensions are rising, nature and humans are increasingly on the move, searching for new places to
establish a foothold.
For Herbarium, the artists explored the herbarium collection of the Natural History Museum, searching for Rotterdam plants that
are locally extinct or threatened with extinction. This vanished urban nature formed the basis for a new series of felt plants behind glass,
like dried specimens in a museum.
In this exhibition, a selection of these works is brought together in one large composition, referencing the museum archives and their value for knowledge about urban nature. The felt artworks, watercolors, and embroidery pieces reveal the artists’ quest and make tangible the stakes when species disappear.
The Felt Plant Collection by Driessens & van den Baar was created in 2009, based on plants with soft leaves. In 2023, this led to their first herbarium series, dedicated to locally extinct species from places of personal significance to the artist duo.

the herbarium collection consists of 18 wool felt works, 5 watercolors and 4 embroidery works
The Herbarium project was made possible in part by Het Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam, Gallery Untitled Rottedam, Iza van den Baar en CBK Rotterdam.
The show is open from January the 23th – May 24th 2026
