Artist Statement

As artists, Driessens and van den Baar develop images with a view on current events, as they are visible in their immediate environment and the media. Their quest is to seduce with the beauty of the images, thereby revealing a deeper message that causes doubt and encourages reconsideration. The central question here is what their personal attention and intuition mean for their role as an artist and what the role of Art can be in a general sense. They achieve this by analyzing, innovating and creating using their own developed method in order to contribute to a greater insight into the world in which we live together. Their collective energy and attention can be found in all works of art.
The making itself, the craftsmanship plays an important role in this. The value of the time it takes to complete work is essential. During creation, final decisions are made about the final work.
The material wool felt not only literally represents protection against cold, heat, water and fire, but also has the unique property of radiating powerful colors vividly and richly, attracting attention.
With their often committed work, Driessens and van den Baar present on both the art and design stages with two- and three-dimensional work.

About their work

As an artist duo, they have been working together on an extensive oeuvre since 1999.
Their lives are in total connection with each other, with their work, with the city of Rotterdam and with developments in the world. Visual Arts is the profession in which they research and propagate this. The curators and stages in the art and design world ensure visibility and sales and new questions also arise from these two worlds. Here they realise their own space and meaning, which ensures that they can continue to develop. The studio is the epic center, where connections are made with the people they work with, the city and the art and design world and where all their ideas are converted into concrete images. Everything is made in their studios, with a small group of specialists who excel in traditional techniques. This makes each work unique.
The artists collect images, traces of (temporary) presence of people, analyze these and transform the resulting ideas into works of art that ensure that reality and the future are looked at again and differently. They do this from the autonomy of the visual artist. art, in which the resulting image itself is central. But they also use the field of design, in which their work is partly included when it has an applied meaning in addition to a visual one. This makes them a visible link between the fields of art and design and their work is shown and appreciated on both stages.
Since 2009, migration, related to the consequences of the destruction of nature by our human actions, has been the recurring theme in their work.

This resulted in five main projects between 2009 and 2024:

1.The Felt Plants Collection under the slogan: “You feel at home where you grow your own plants”. Since 2009, this collection has been representative of the waves of migration in South Rotterdam (where the artists live and work). If someone is allowed to live somewhere for more than a few weeks, neighbours will see houseplants appear behind the windows, as the first sign of setting up a new home for a longer period of time. If this goes wrong, the houseplants are the first to be placed on the street, with the rest of the furniture. The Felt Plants are monochrome sculptures made of wool felt, with a high artisanal quality. They have become an iconic image in their work and are presented and sold in both the art and design worlds. Their strict, monochrome appearance makes them monumental, especially when they measure between 2 and 5 meters. At the same time they are humorous because of the often bright colours and the material wool felt.

2.The series “Traces”, felt tapestries made after three years of photographing mountains of coarse rubbish in the neighbourhoods of Rotterdam South, are the sequel to the Felt Plants, in the period 2015 – 2020. The mountains of rubbish were the belongings of people who left again from Rotterdam South, whether or not out of necessity, looking for a better life. The exceptionally precise craftsmanship in many colours of felt turns “the mess” into a beautiful aesthetic statement. They have become great conversation pieces, they tell the story of migration, whether or not to find a new place to live in Rotterdam. The universal question arises here: “who decides (in the future) where people are allowed to live?” The same friction between the grimness of the subject and the beauty of the execution can be seen in the subsequent series:

3.“It’s No Rocket Science”, is a series of felt works following the Covid 19 lockdown in March 2020. In this, the artists have studied statistics in newspapers and on the internet about infections, countries, hospitals, deaths, refugees, dollar exchange rates, etc. taken as a starting point for abstract, schematic works in felt. The beauty of these diagrams is in stark contrast to what the world was in at that time: lockdowns and deaths around the world. Suddenly everyone was surrounded by the same danger. These so-called Corona works are a series of unique, handmade textile works from wool felt, in which spatial abstractions have been created, again in monochrome color schemes. One exception is an application of colourful, schematic embroidery, in which the immense amount of numbers as pixels, in the form of embroidery stitches, have been explored. In this same period the “Dunkirk works”, part of the “No One Is Illegal” project, were created.

4.“No One Is Illegal” is an installation that houses the “Dunkirk works” starting in 2020 and has become an ongoing series until now. Covid 19 made it very difficult for the artists to travel and show and sell their work, but they immediately realised that in the Netherlands, compared to migrants elsewhere in Europe at the same time, they had nothing to complain about. From photos of Saar Depuydt, who goes to Dunkirk every Saturday with friends with cars full of food and clothing to help refugees who are hiding in the woods around Dunkirk, the artists have made three small felt works that they will continue to make again and again as long as Saar continues to help the refugees. They sell them for €350 each, of which €175 goes to Saar for her work. The works are unique and handmade. The three compositions remain the same, they always differ in color. The works are strongly reminiscent of Japanese Mangas, they are very colourful and attractive, which means they are sold almost immediately after they have been published on Instagram or exhibited. By the end of 2023, 102 have been sold.

5. “Collateral Damage” is the solo exhibition at Gallery Untitled, from October 15th, 2023 – January 21st, 2024. Here the artists show new works in which nature and the landscape as a protective, threatening and threatened phenomenon form the starting point. Some of the works are related to the disappearance of people on the run, in the sea, in forests (fires), in mountains and deserts, on their way to Europe and in search of a new life. Another part is about the disappearance of nature itself, as a result of our human actions. Global warming is the connecting factor of both topics. Ultimately, this causes problems and conflicts, forcing people on the run to find new housing. Here again the central question is: “who or what determines where people can live?”. The new collection of works of art, which was created between January and October 2023, is the outcome of a search for visual elements that try to indicate this major phenomenon.

The immense consequences of man-made environmental problems and global warming are difficult to comprehend. Through their powerful aesthetic imagery, the works of art by Driessens & van den Baar provide the opportunity to get a grip on this content and to see connections that evoke awe for nature and the works of art themselves.

Artist Statement

Als kunstenaar ontwikkelen Driessens en van den Baar beelden met een visie op actuele gebeurtenissen, zoals die voelbaar zijn in hun directe omgeving en de media. Het is hun zoektocht om met de schoonheid van de beelden te verleiden, om daarmee een dieper liggende boodschap te onthullen die twijfel veroorzaakt en aanzet tot heroverweging. Hierin staat de vraag centraal wat hun persoonlijke aandacht en intuïtie betekenen voor hun rol als kunstenaar en wat de rol van de Kunst in algemene zin kan zijn. Dit bereiken ze door op een eigen ontwikkelde werkwijze te  analyseren,  vernieuwen en maken om zo bij te dragen aan een groter inzicht in de wereld waarin wij samen leven. Hun gezamenlijke energie en aandacht is terug te vinden in alle kunstwerken.
Het maken zelf, het handwerk speelt hierin een belangrijke rol. De waarde van de tijd die er nodig is om werk tot stand te laten komen is essentiëel. Tijdens het maken worden de definitieve beslissingen genomen over het uiteindelijke werk.
Het materiaal wolvilt vertegenwoordigt niet alleen letterlijk bescherming tegen kou, hitte, water en vuur, maar heeft ook de unieke eigenschap om krachtige kleuren levendig en rijk uit te stralen, waardoor de aandacht getrokken wordt. Driessens en van den Baar begeven zich met hun niet zelden geëngageerd werk op zowel de kunst- als designpodia met twee- en driedimensionaal werk.

Over ons werk

Als kunstenaarsduo werken ze sinds 1999 samen aan een uitgebreid oeuvre.
Hun leven is in totale verbondenheid met elkaar, met hun werk, met de stad Rotterdam en met de ontwikkelingen in de wereld. Beeldende Kunst is het vak waarin ze dat onderzoeken en uitdragen. De podia in de kunst,- en designwereld zorgen voor de zichtbaarheid en de verkoop en vanuit die twee werelden komen ook nieuwe vragen op hen af. Hierin realiseren ze hun eigen ruimte en betekenis, die ervoor zorgt dat ze kunnen blijven ontwikkelen Het atelier is het episch centrum, waar de verbindingen tot stand komen met de mensen met wie zij werken, de stad en de kunst- en designwereld en waar al hun ideeën worden omgezet in concrete beelden.  Alles wordt gemaakt in hun ateliers, met een kleine groep specialisten, die uitblinkt in ambachtelijke technieken. Daardoor is elk werk uniek.
De kunstenaars verzamelen beelden, sporen van (tijdelijke) aanwezigheid van mensen, analyseren deze en transformeren de daaruit voortgekomen ideeën tot kunstwerken die ervoor zorgen dat er opnieuw en anders naar de werkelijkheid en de toekomst wordt gekeken.Dit doen ze vanuit de autonomie van de beeldende kunst, waarin het ontstane beeld zelf centraal staat. Maar ze maken ook gebruik van het vakgebied design, waarin hun werk deels wordt opgenomen op het moment dat het naast een beeldende ook een toegepaste betekenis heeft. Hierdoor zijn zij een zichtbare schakel tussen de vakgebieden kunst en design en wordt hun werk op beide podia getoond en gewaardeerd.
Vanaf 2009 is migratie, gerelateerd aan de consequenties van de afbraak van de natuur door ons menselijk handelen , het terugkerende thema in hun werk .

Hieruit zijn vijf hoofdprojecten tussen 2009 en 2024 voortgekomen:

1.De Viltplanten Collectie onder de slogan: “You feel at home where you grow your own plants”. Sinds 2009 is deze collectie representatief voor de migratiegolven in Rotterdam Zuid (waar de kunstenaars wonen en werken). Indien iemand langer dan een paar weken ergens mag wonen zien zij als buren kamerplanten verschijnen achter de ramen, als eerste teken van het inrichten van een nieuw verblijf voor langere tijd. Indien dit misgaat liggen de kamerplanten als eerste op straat, bij de rest van de inboedel. De Viltplanten zijn monochrome sculpturen van wolvilt, met een hoge ambachtelijke kwaliteit.  Ze zijn een iconisch beeld in hun werk geworden en worden zowel in de kunst- als in de designwereld gepresenteerd en verkocht. Hun strenge, monochrome uiterlijk maken ze monumentaal, zeker wanneer ze een formaat van tussen de 2 en 5 meter hebben. Tegelijk zijn ze humoristisch door de vaak felle kleuren en het materiaal wolvilt.

2.De serie “Traces”, vilten wandtapijten gemaakt n.a.v. het drie jaar fotograferen van bergen grof vuil in de wijken van Rotterdam Zuid zijn het vervolg op de Viltplanten, in de periode 2015 – 2020. De bergen vuilnis waren inboedels van mensen die weer vertrokken zijn uit Rotterdam Zuid, al dan niet noodgedwongen, op zoek naar een beter bestaan. Het uitgesproken nauwkeurige handwerk in vele kleuren vilt maakt “de rommel” tot een prachtig esthetisch geheel. Het zijn grote conversation pieces geworden, ze vertellen het verhaal van migratie, het al dan niet vinden van een nieuwe bestaansplek in Rotterdam. Hier speelt de universele vraag: ” wie bepaalt (in de toekomst) waar mesen mogen wonen?  Dezelfde frictie tussen de grimmigheid van het onderwerp en de schoonheid van de uitvoering is te zien in de daaropvolgende series:

3.“It’s No Rocket Science”, is een serie viltwerken n.a.v. de Covid 19 lockdown in maart 2020. Hierin hebben de kunstenaars de in kranten en op internet verschenen statistieken over besmettingen, landen, ziekenhuizen, sterfgevallen, vluchtelingen, dollarkoersen etc. bestudeerd en als uitgangspunt genomen voor abstracte, schematische werken in vilt. De schoonheid van deze schema’s staat in schril contrast met waar de wereld zich op dat moment in bevond: lockdowns en doden over de hele wereld. Ineens was iedereen omringd door hetzelfde gevaar. Deze zogenaamde Corona werken is een serie van unica, handgemaakte textielwerken van wolvilt, waarin met name ruimtelijke abstracties zijn ontstaan, wederom in monochrome kleurstellingen. Eén uitzondering is een toepassing van kleurrijk, schematische borduurwerken, waarin de immense hoeveelheid getallen als pixels, in de vorm van borduursteken, zijn onderzocht. In deze zelfde periode ontsonden de “Duinkerke werken”, deel van het project “No One Is Illegal”.

4.“No One Is Illegal” is een installatie waarin de “Duinkerke werken” zijn ondergebracht vanaf 2020 en het is een doorlopende serie geworden, tot op heden. Covid 19 maakte het voor de kunstenaars heel moeilijk om te reizen en hun werk te tonen en verkopen, maar direct realiseerden zij zich dat zij in Nederland, in verhouding met migranten op ditzelfde moment elders in Europa niets te klagen hadden. N.a.v. foto’s van Saar Depuydt, die elke zaterdag met vrienden met auto’s vol eten en kleding vluchtelingen gaat helpen die zich in de bossen rond Duinkerke schuilhouden, hebben de kunstenaars drie kleine viltwerken gemaakt die zij steeds opnieuw blijven maken zolang Saar de vluchtelingen blijft helpen. Ze verkopen ze voor €350,- per stuk, waarvan € 175,- naar Saar gaat voor haar werk. De werken zijn uniek en handgemaakt. De drie composities blijven gelijk, ze verschillen telkens weer van kleur. De werken doen sterk denken aan Japanse Mangas, ze zijn zeer kleurrijk en aantrekkelijk, waardoor ze vrijwel direct verkocht worden, nadat ze op instagram zijn gepubliceerd, of geëxposeerd. Eind 2022 zijn er 102 verkocht.

5. “Collateral Damage” is de solo tentoonstelling bij Gallery Untitled, van 15 oktober 2023 – 21 januari 2024. Hier tonen de kunstenaars nieuwe werken waarin de natuur en het landschap als beschermend, bedreigend en bedreigd fenomeen het uitgangspunt vormen. Een deel van de werken houdt verband met de verdwijning van mensen op de vlucht, in de zee, in bossen (branden), in bergen en woestijnen, op weg naar Europa en op zoek naar een nieuw leven. Een ander deel gaat over het verdwijnen van de natuur zelf, als gevolg van ons menselijk handelen. De opwarming van de aarde is de verbindende factor van beide onderwerpen. Uiteindelijk ontstaan hierdoor problemen en conflicten, waardoor mensen op de vlucht een nieuw onderkomen moeten zoeken. Ook hier weer staat de vraag centraal: “wie of wat bepaalt waar mensen kunnen wonen?”. De nieuwe collectie kunstwerken, die tussen januari en oktober 2023 tot stand is gekomen is de uitkomst van een zoektocht naar visuele elementen die dit grote fenomeen probeert te duiden. De immense gevolgen van de door de mens veroorzaakte milieu problemen en opwarming van de aarde zijn nauwelijks te bevatten. De kunstwerken van Driessens & van den Baar geven door hun krachtige esthetische beeldtaal de mogelijkheid grip te krijgen op deze inhoud en verbanden te zien, die ontzag oproepen voor de natuur en de kunstwerken zelf.

De immense gevolgen van door de mens veroorzaakte milieuproblemen en de opwarming van de aarde zijn moeilijk te bevatten. De kunstwerken van Driessens & van den Baar bieden door hun krachtige esthetische beeldtaal de mogelijkheid om grip te krijgen op deze inhoud en verbanden te zien die ontzag oproepen voor de natuur en de kunstwerken zelf.
